Sighting in La Roche-sur-Foron, June 30, 2007

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on June 30, 2007 in La Roche-sur-Foron (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

In November 2008, a year and a half after the event, a report reached the GEIPAN after the witness watched a documentary online. On 30 June 2007 at 9:43 a.m., a motorist driving along the A410 motorway toward Annecy had noticed an object hanging in the air. It was dark in color and had several faces. It moved very slowly, swaying as it went.

The witness took a photograph with a mobile phone while driving. According to them, the picture did not capture the object's color or shape.

The witness later compared their sighting with film footage of another case recorded in Annemasse on the same day, toward the end of the morning. They then positively recognized the object as a tetrahedral weather balloon, of the kind used by the Météo Nationale or by scientists. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A, an identified observation.
