Sighting in La Tremblade, November 22, 2013

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on November 22, 2013 in La Tremblade (Charente-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably the planet Venus (class B).

What happened

The witness watched a white light in a clear sky for a long time. At moments it seemed to twinkle blue. They heard no sound, and no other testimony was collected.

The investigation compared this long, repeated sighting of a very bright point of light near the southwest in the early evening with the planet Venus, which was especially visible at the time (magnitude -4.6). The changes in brightness come from variations in the atmosphere, probably linked to the nearby ocean. The directions the witness gave match the planet's position. Two discrepancies remain: the witness estimated the elevation at about 45°, whereas Venus was around 10°, and they described a noticeable movement of the phenomenon across the sky. GEIPAN attributed these to the lack of precise reference points during the observation and to the many places from which it was made. The witness also mentioned the Moon, which was not in the sky at that hour on 22 November, but explained in a separate message that they had seen it on Tuesday the 19th.

GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Venus.
