Sighting in Le Perreux-sur-Marne, June 8, 2015

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 8, 2015 in Le Perreux-sur-Marne (Val-de-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At 2:30 in the morning, a witness looking out of a roof window at the night sky saw about ten red-orange points of light moving silently in a straight line. They travelled from east to south, crossed the sky in under a minute, then gradually faded out. Only one account was collected.

The sighting took place on a weekend night. GEIPAN concluded that the lights were very probably Thai lanterns, released nearby at the end of a private party. Lights that appear and then fade out gradually are typical of such lanterns launched one after another, and their burn time is a few minutes depending on the burner. The direction of travel is consistent with the light north-westerly wind recorded by the Infoclimat station at Roissy, 20 km away, and with the readings for Neuilly-sur-Marne. The case was classed B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
