Sighting in Limeil-Brévannes, May 7, 2015
Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on May 7, 2015 in Limeil-Brévannes (Val-de-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).
What happened
Very early in the morning, the witness noticed a very bright object crossing the sky at high speed without making any noise. Its path looked like that of a shooting star, but it seemed to travel much lower in the sky.
Investigators linked this account to a video recording reported by the BOAM network. At 2:27 UT (4:27 local time), a camera at Gretz-Armainvilliers, in Seine-et-Marne, had filmed what appeared to be a similar phenomenon, toward the east-northeast at an elevation of about 50°. This time of year is fairly favorable for such sightings because of the Eta Aquariid meteor shower, and GEIPAN received other sets of similar reports during the same period.
GEIPAN classified the case as A: the witness saw a bolide, the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid probably from the Eta Aquariid stream, which comes from the direction of the constellation Aquarius.
