Sighting in Limeil-Brévannes, December 7, 2015

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on December 7, 2015 in Limeil-Brévannes (Val-de-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10:45 pm, a witness noticed three lights high in the sky, arranged in a triangle. They were white or red and seemed to be connected to one another. They crossed the sky over a few minutes, moving from south-southwest to north-northeast. Only one witness account was collected.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that these were Thai lanterns, probably released nearby, perhaps at the end of a private party. The direction of travel matches the south wind recorded at Orly, 7 km away. Because these lanterns give off little light, people often think they are farther away than they really are, and therefore faster. Lanterns are most often released at weekends. The case was classified B, probable observation of Thai lanterns.
