Sighting in Louveciennes, February 26, 2011

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on February 26, 2011 in Louveciennes (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A witness reported an observation made with their family at around 9:45 p.m. Everyone present saw an orange ball of light moving across the sky. The object abruptly changed direction, then vanished as it climbed, at a speed the witness described as "lightning-fast".

The GEIPAN considered the case to have a low degree of strangeness: a large share of the described features match those of well-known phenomena that are very often observed and reported to the GEIPAN. It concluded that the witnesses had probably seen a luminous flying lantern pass by, and classified the case as B (probably identified).
