Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 1, 1977 in Machilly (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

A witness on holiday wrote to the gendarmerie to report what they had seen at around 8:15 p.m. They described three moving objects shaped like slightly flattened eggs. The objects looked shiny and gave off beams of light. The letter gave no further details on how long the sighting lasted, which way the objects went, or how large they appeared.

No other witness account was gathered from the area. The area is also regularly overflown by aircraft coming from two nearby airfields. GEIPAN concluded that the witness had probably observed an aircraft, and classified the case as B (probably identified).

Account rewritten by SkyUnknown from the investigation report published by GEIPAN (CNES). The original text and case documents are on the official record.
