Sighting in Magny-les-Hameaux, February 6, 2017

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on February 6, 2017 in Magny-les-Hameaux (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

In the evening, at 7:16 pm, the witness was standing in front of their garage when a dark, triangular shape with two white lights moved slowly across the sky above their house. The sighting lasted about 30 seconds, which was too short for the witness to take a photograph. It is the only account that was collected.

The investigation found that a low-flying aircraft was present at or very close to the site of the sighting, both on the virtual radar (Plane Finder) and on the national radar record. Unfortunately the national radar data had been framed away from the location, but the end of the aircraft's track is visible, heading toward where the witness was. Both records show the aircraft flying loops or back-and-forth patterns, which makes it possible that the witness saw it pass from east to west.

GEIPAN did not consider it necessary or justified to try to identify this aircraft, which showed nothing unusual since it was cooperating with the national radars. Its characteristics were therefore not available to compare with the sighting, but the description is consistent with an aircraft: from the ground, the green and red navigation lights are often not visible, and white landing lights or red ground-marking lights can stand out. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of an aircraft.
