Sighting in Marnaz, April 21, 2015

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on April 21, 2015 in Marnaz (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the star Sirius (class A).

What happened

At about 9:30 pm, a witness noticed a light in the sky that flashed and took on every colour. The phenomenon lasted around five minutes, after which the light disappeared. The witness used those minutes to film it. When questioned afterwards, they specified that they had been looking toward the south-west, above Mont-Saxonnex. Two days later, they saw the same phenomenon again.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the description fits the star Sirius as it was setting. As the brightest star in the sky, it often twinkles strongly, because its light interacts with particles in the atmosphere. The case was classified A: observation of the star Sirius.
