Sighting in Mazères, October 9, 2012

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on October 9, 2012 in Mazères (Gironde, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 10:40 p.m. on a weekday evening, a witness standing in their garden noticed two dark yellow points of light in the sky. At first they seemed motionless, then they moved quickly toward the southwest. The witness heard no particular sound. The sighting lasted about three minutes, until the lights passed out of view.

The investigation, carried out on site with the witness and then with the military authorities, showed that the sighting matched large-scale military maneuvers exactly. The authorities, however, did not say what type of craft was involved (helicopter, airplane or illuminating balloon). No other account of the same phenomenon was available to confirm that it had taken place above an air base.

GEIPAN therefore had a serious, well-supported hypothesis, but no formal proof. It classified the case as category B: very probably two aircraft during military maneuvers.
