Sighting in Mennecy, June 13, 2015

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 13, 2015 in Mennecy (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:20 pm, several people sitting on a terrace noticed an orange shape in the sky. It moved silently along a straight path. At 12:05 am, two of these witnesses again saw an orange shape crossing the sky without a sound. Intrigued, they phoned the gendarmerie, which sent out a patrol. Only one witness account was collected about the phenomenon.

The investigation noted that orange balls crossing the sky over a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggest Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. In the first sighting the movement went from the northwest toward the southwest; in the second, from the east toward the west. This fits the light north wind recorded at Orly at 11 pm, which shifted to the northeast by around midnight. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
