Sighting in Meulan, April 15, 2012

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on April 15, 2012 in Meulan (Yvelines, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 22:31 on a clear night, the witness saw an object that was at first stationary and then moved from west to east at low altitude. A dull sound could be heard. The object passed over the apartment building and the witness lost sight of it. The sighting was short, but the witness still had time to film it with their mobile phone. No other witness account was reported.

The investigation concluded that this was most likely a misidentification of an airliner on approach to Roissy airport. The oddest aspect of the case was the witness's confusion: they live in line with the Roissy runways, 50 km from the threshold, and so should be used to the heavy air traffic heading there, even though only part of that traffic flies over their home. The photos and video might have allowed a deeper analysis, but the witness did not send them directly. They had shared them through online services, and the files are no longer accessible, so they could not be analysed. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C because of insufficient information, bordering on a B classification (aircraft).
