Sighting in Monaco, November 2, 2012

Sighting on November 2, 2012 in Monaco (Monaco). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., three people noticed two balls of red light cross the sky about five minutes apart. Each one moved slowly toward the sea and then vanished along a rising path. A hazy look was visible above the lights.

GEIPAN found that the sighting matched everything expected of Thai lanterns: silent, orange-red lights drifting at low altitude with the wind, on a weekend evening. The weather record showed a light north-westerly wind. The haze could have come from steam given off by the damp, heated envelope, or from smoke from the burner. The witness did not accept this explanation, but GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of two Thai lanterns.
