Sighting in Monastir, November 6, 2023

Tunisia

Sighting from an aircraft on November 6, 2023 in Monastir (Tunisia). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a train of Starlink satellites (class A).

What happened

During a flight from Monastir to Orly, at around 8:30 pm, an airline pilot and the co-pilots noticed points of light of varying brightness. The points followed different paths, moved at different speeds and were accompanied by brief flashes. The observation lasted about an hour and a half, until the start of the descent toward Paris. The same kind of phenomenon appeared again on later flights.

GEIPAN rated the case as low in strangeness and good in consistency: there were several witnesses, but only one account and no photo, although that account was fairly complete. The investigation concluded that the witnesses had seen flashes from Starlink® satellites, a type of observation that matches the description consistently. An analysis with the Stellarium software shows that the phenomenon was located 45° above the apparent position of the Sun, which was then between 30° and 45° below the horizon. This configuration holds for all the reported observation dates. The case is classified A.
