Sighting in Moselle, May 11, 2008

Grand Est, France

Sighting on May 11, 2008, exact location not given (département: Moselle, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 10:50 pm, two witnesses saw a dark, triangular mass cross the sky at high speed. It carried white, green and red lights, some steady and some flashing. The sighting lasted several tens of seconds, and a faint, low-pitched sound was heard while it lasted.

The event dated back some time when the case was examined. After the story appeared in the press, several other accounts were added to the main testimony. The panel of experts working with GEIPAN reviewed the case, found its strangeness level low, and classified it B: the object was probably an aircraft, a hypothesis that one of the spontaneous witnesses had put forward. GEIPAN considered it a typical case of confusion in describing an aircraft's lights, in which the white, green and red lights, steady or flashing, were mistaken for one another.
