Sighting in Mougins, September 17, 2014

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on September 17, 2014 in Mougins (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 5 p.m., the witness noticed a round, red object in the sky. It seemed to spin on itself, and the witness thought of a saucer. It moved in a straight line, in the direction of the wind, toward the west.

The wind recorded in Nice that day blew from the east, which matches the direction the object travelled. This path led the investigation to suggest a balloon carried by the wind, most likely a latex or Mylar party balloon. GEIPAN classified the case as B: it was probably a child's balloon.
