Sighting in Navacelles, May 6, 2015

Gard, Occitanie, France

Sighting on May 6, 2015 in Navacelles (Gard, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft contrail (class A).

What happened

At around 9 p.m., a witness noticed several streaks in the sky that caught their attention. Intrigued, they took photographs. They were the only person to report the sighting, but their account was precise and backed by numerous photos.

The investigation compared the appearance of these streaks with many similar cases: contrails left by airliners, lit by the setting sun, in an atmospheric layer suited to their formation. An optical effect caused by perspective also accounts for the way they looked. GEIPAN concluded that the witness had very almost certainly seen persistent contrails from airliners. The testimony was highly consistent, even though it came from a single person, and the sighting was judged to be of very little strangeness, since the phenomenon could be identified immediately. The case was classified A: a definite observation of aircraft contrails.
