Sighting in Neuilly-en-Thelle, January 3, 1980

Oise, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on January 3, 1980 in Neuilly-en-Thelle (Oise, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

The witness was closing their shutters at about 8:05 in the morning when they noticed a red ball in the sky. It went behind some clouds and then appeared again. According to the witness, it moved erratically and very fast, travelling from south-east to north-west.

The witness called out to a neighbour, who could not see the object described. The witness took photographs, and the gendarmes were able to look at the negative, which showed a brown spot. The negative can no longer be found in the archives. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN concluded that the witness most probably saw the full moon. At the time given, it was setting and was lit by the rising sun, which gave it its red colour. The case is classed B, probably identified.
