Sighting in Nice, February 6, 1979

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on February 6, 1979 in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

A passer-by noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky at about 9:20 a.m. and it caught their attention. For roughly two minutes, they saw a saucer-shaped object with blue and yellow lines at the rear, which eventually vanished. Buildings then hid the object from view. When the witness found it again, they saw a denser, rounded light at its center. The object stayed motionless inside a luminous halo and sat at an angle of 20° to the ground. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation noted that at that hour the sun was very low on the horizon, in line with the direction of observation. GEIPAN concluded that the witness had seen a motionless luminous object, most likely a reflection of the sun through the clouds, and classified the case B (probably identified).
