Sighting in Nice, June 9, 2007

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on June 9, 2007 in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

At about 1:30 in the morning, a witness noticed a very bright light in the sky that aroused their curiosity. They filmed it for several minutes. The gendarmerie at Nice Est was very reluctant to take their statement, so the witness contacted the GEIPAN directly. Their account was therefore recorded on a direct questionnaire rather than in a gendarmerie report.

A check using the Winstars 2 software quickly showed that the witness had seen the planet Jupiter under very favourable viewing conditions. These conditions had also been mentioned in the June issue of the magazine Sciences et Avenir. The witness, who had carried out their own analysis, had reached the same conclusion. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: the phenomenon was fully identified.
