Sighting in Nice, April 14, 2010

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on April 14, 2010 in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness saw a red point of light moving slowly between 9:50 and 9:56 p.m., so for about six minutes. The light rose gently, then stopped moving in the sky before vanishing.

GEIPAN noted that these features (a slow upward movement, a pause, then disappearance) are consistent with the release of a Thai-style flying lantern, a phenomenon that is now well known. GEIPAN had asked the main witness for further information, in particular the gendarmerie report, which would have allowed a preliminary investigation, but the request went unanswered. Because of this lack of information, the case was classified C, and the lantern explanation could not be confirmed.
