Sighting in Nice, May 29, 2011

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on May 29, 2011 in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

A witness watched the sky through binoculars between 10:41 and 10:45 p.m. (the source gives "22h410", probably a typing error). They saw about a hundred white points of light, very high up. The group had no cohesion and drifted only slightly, in a random way, toward the east and south.

The GEIPAN linked this slight drift to the wind, which was light at the time. It proposed that the points were balloons released during a celebration, faintly lit by the city lights. No Moon was visible at that moment. The case was classified B: probable observation of balloons.
