Sighting in Nice, May 3, 2013

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on May 3, 2013 in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 4:45 p.m., a witness standing in front of a school noticed several sources of light in the sky arranged in a triangle. They were moving slowly toward the east. The witness called over another person, who also saw the objects. The two of them kept watching for 30 to 40 minutes while making their way home. No one else came forward. A photograph had been taken, but no usable image exists, and there is no video.

GEIPAN considered the testimony consistent, precise and detailed. The shape, appearance and brightness of the objects resemble those of a cluster of Mylar balloons drifting with the wind at high altitude, and their slow movement fits calm atmospheric conditions. The case was therefore classified B: probable sighting of a group of Mylar balloons. The sighting is of low strangeness, since such objects are quite ordinary, but they can look unusual under certain conditions.
