Sighting in Noisy-le-Grand, August 26, 2024

Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on August 26, 2024 in Noisy-le-Grand (Seine-Saint-Denis, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

While at their workplace, the witness saw a black object in the sky at 11:40 on a Monday. It hung in place and rotated steadily on its own axis. It reflected sunlight at intervals, producing flashes. The sighting lasted about five minutes, after which the object disappeared from the witness's view.

There were two witnesses, but only one account was collected, and no photo or video exists. GEIPAN therefore rated the case's consistency as medium.

The investigation looked at two hypotheses: a helium-filled Mylar balloon and a drone. The balloon hypothesis had more arguments in its favour: the object's rotation, its great height, the reflection of sunlight, and its final drift in the direction of the wind, which made it vanish. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the object was probably a Mylar balloon carried by the wind.
