Sighting in Oye-Plage, October 27, 1954

Around 11:15 p.m., a witness walking along the R.N. 40 road noticed an opalescent glow about ten metres ahead. It was a cigar-shaped craft roughly 8 m long and 0.80 to 1 m in diameter, with the front looking wider than the rear. It had no windows or door. It moved silently at about 30 km/h, some 20 m above the road, following its bends. Its yellowish-white light was confined to the outline of the craft and did not light up the roofs of the houses it passed over.

The object vanished around a bend in the road, reappeared further on, then suddenly veered left, toward the southwest, at the entrance to the town of Marck, 5 km away. It then looked motionless and spherical, with a more intense, more yellow glow. The witness went home and made a meal. They still saw the object in the same spot, but it was gone after the meal. Despite their efforts to get someone else to see it, they were the only person to observe it.

GEIPAN judged the observation to be of moderate consistency: a single witness, apparently in good faith, and a description that was not very strange, just a point of light seen from fairly far away. The object's movements were only noticed while the witness was moving; once at home, they saw it stationary. Several hypotheses were considered: a distant light low on the horizon that seemed to follow the witness. An astronomical check showed only Mars in the direction of observation, but it set at 11 p.m. A light from the port of Calais is also possible, as is a helicopter searchlight. The case is classified C because of a lack of corroboration.
