Sighting in Paris, April 7, 2011

Île-de-France, France

Sighting on April 7, 2011, exact location not given (département: Paris, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A witness living on the seventh floor of a building noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky at 11:06 p.m. and found it puzzling. It looked like a single group made up of two rather oval parts very close together. Their color changed from white to orange, then to red, and the phenomenon finally vanished without any particular sound.

GEIPAN's investigation found that the description matched two Thai lanterns moving away from the witness. The color change from white to orange to red, and the drift with the wind in a direction close to the witness's line of sight, support this explanation. The lanterns may have been launched from the banks of the Seine, not far from the witness, and then carried by a wind blowing roughly from north to south. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
