Sighting in Paris, September 24, 2011

Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 24, 2011, exact location not given (département: Paris, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At 3:35 a.m., a taxi driver saw a luminous phenomenon from inside their vehicle, moving horizontally and without any sound. It was shaped like a fluorescent green cone, with its end closed off by a red line. The object crossed the witness's field of view and quickly vanished. No other witness account was gathered about this phenomenon.

GEIPAN considered the case to have good consistency, with low to medium strangeness. The features described match those of a bolide, meaning a meteoroid entering the atmosphere: a green light with a trail, travelling in a straight line for a few seconds. The phenomenon was probably recorded by only one of the cameras in the BOAM network (a network of meteor observers), whereas at least two should have captured it. For that reason, a firm and definitive conclusion is not strictly possible. The case is classified B: probable observation of a bolide.
