Sighting in Paris, December 20, 2011

Île-de-France, France

Sighting on December 20, 2011, exact location not given (département: Paris, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10:05 p.m., a witness saw a red object moving across the sky in a straight line and in complete silence. Two or three yellow lights were visible at its center.

The investigation found that the description matched the characteristics of Thai lanterns: red-orange balls that drift with the wind. The weather record showed a west wind. The end-of-year holiday period may have been the reason for a small release of lanterns. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
