Sighting in Paris, March 23, 2012

Île-de-France, France

Sighting on March 23, 2012, exact location not given (département: Paris, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., a witness noticed two red lights moving silently above the buildings of Paris. Their movement intrigued the witness, and the lights eventually disappeared from view, hidden by the urban landscape.

The GEIPAN investigation found that the sighting has all the typical features of Thai lanterns: red lights drifting silently and uniformly with the wind for a few minutes, on a weekend evening when parties are common. The recorded wind came from the northwest to north, at 6 to 15 km/h. Releasing such lanterns in the middle of a city is not recommended, but it happens fairly often. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
