Sighting in Port Vila, June 7, 1978
France
Sighting on June 7, 1978 in Port Vila (France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
Between 7:30 and 8:00 pm, three fishermen were on a boat when a luminous phenomenon caught their attention for several minutes. A white light was moving slowly along the coast, then turned and headed toward them.
When the object came level with the boat, the witnesses described a craft with coloured flames coming out of its rear, and no noise at all. It then abruptly changed course to head back toward the coast and vanished suddenly. The three fishermen were deeply impressed.
Other people saw something the same evening, but the description they gave to the gendarmerie most likely matches a shooting star. As for the fishermen's sighting, the investigation ruled out an aircraft, a boat, a weather balloon and signal lights. Despite a thorough inquiry, the case remained unexplained and was classed D by GEIPAN.
