Sighting in Puget-sur-Argens, February 19, 2015

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on February 19, 2015 in Puget-sur-Argens (Var, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A motorist who was driving in the early afternoon noticed an object in the sky that looked like an airliner, but larger and apparently flying much lower. It was entirely white, shaped like an X, and seemed not to move. It then vanished all at once. The sighting was brief, with a single witness and no photograph.

GEIPAN considered several explanations. An aircraft, as the witness thought, would have been in a very unlikely position, and the sudden disappearance would remain hard to account for. An air corridor does exist in the direction the witness indicated, but planes there normally fly too high to look so large. Because the case was handled too late, it was not possible to check whether an aircraft had been in the witness's field of view. Other possibilities were a small, short-lived cloud made very bright by the sun, or the reflection of a white or reflective object inside the car, briefly lit by the sun depending on the car's heading, which would neatly explain why it stayed still and then disappeared.

None of these hypotheses could be confirmed, as no cross-checking or further investigation was possible. GEIPAN classified the case C, for lack of information. It is considered of low strangeness, since the phenomenon was distant and behaved like known phenomena, and of low consistency, since it rests on a single, brief human testimony.
