Sighting in Quincy-sous-Sénart, June 9, 2013

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 9, 2013 in Quincy-sous-Sénart (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At 8:09 pm, several people watched two objects move together, without any sound, across a cloudy sky. The two polygon-shaped objects always stayed the same distance apart. They rose into the sky and gradually vanished into the clouds.

From the living-room window, which overlooks the garden and faces west-northwest, the witness saw the objects travel from right to left, toward the Senart forest, which lies to the southwest. The objects were therefore moving from the north or northeast toward the south or southwest. The witness had, however, described an east-to-west path, which would have taken the objects directly over their house. At Orly, the wind blew from the north at 8 pm, then from the northeast at 9 pm.

The investigation found this wind consistent with the observed movement, assuming the objects were helium-filled and carried by the wind. The shapes described match various models of balloons sold at fairs and village festivals, which are frequent on Sundays in June. Because the case showed little strangeness, GEIPAN did not try to trace whoever released the balloons. It classified the case B: probable festive balloons.
