Sighting in Rambouillet, January 7, 2000

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting from an aircraft on January 7, 2000 in Rambouillet (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At about 7:20 p.m., the pilot of an A320 flying to Casablanca saw two balloons pass a short distance below the aircraft. One was blue and the other white, and together they carried a payload that looked like a radar reflector.

After a complaint was filed, Météo-France stated that these were not weather radiosondes. Inquiries made with the military produced no new information. There seems to be little doubt that the objects were balloons, but where they came from could not be established. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probably identified.
