Sighting in Rentree Atmospherique, July 9, 2015

Aude, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 9, 2015 in Rentree Atmospherique (Aude, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At around 7 p.m., two witnesses saw a luminous phenomenon cross the sky quickly. They described it as a bright ball with a trail behind it. The sighting lasted only a few seconds.

The investigation noted that a luminous ball followed by a trail, seen for such a short time, is typical of a bolide. The GEIPAN received one other report of the same event, seen at the same moment, and the IMO (International Meteor Organization) received 14. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the witnesses had seen the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid, which produced a bolide.
