Sighting in Roissy-en-France, July 7, 2005

Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France, France

Sighting from an aircraft on July 7, 2005 in Roissy-en-France (Val-d'Oise, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The commanding pilot of an Air France flight on approach to Charles de Gaulle airport reported that, at 14:14 UTC, the aircraft passed within about half a nautical mile of a grey object. The object appeared to be stationary. The pilot's sketch shows it shaped like an "hourglass". It looked metallic, did not resemble a weather balloon at all, and did not seem to be in free fall. The encounter was reported in an Airprox report.

No radar echo was reported, and the analysis carried out locally on the ground by the air authorities produced no explanation. The source does not say whether other pilots saw the object. The shape observed does not match any kind of balloon, whether scientific, recreational or festive. A balloon escaped from EuroDisney was considered, but at first sight it fits neither the shape nor the colour: balloons are almost always convex, and EuroDisney balloons would be expected to be brightly coloured.

The investigation could go no further, whether by looking for other sightings or by questioning EuroDisney. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for lack of sufficient information.
