Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 12, 1983 in Saint-Amant-Roche-Savine (Puy-de-Dôme, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At 6:30 in the evening, several witnesses noticed a yellow ball moving silently very close to the ground. A cluster of small blue flames trailed behind it. The whole thing broke up suddenly, and the witnesses concluded that something had come down close to where they were standing.

The authorities were alerted straight away and carried out several searches of the surrounding area, but nothing was found. GEIPAN classed the case as B (probably identified): the witnesses most likely saw an atmospheric re-entry, that is, the fall of a luminous ball.
