Sighting in Saint-Germain-sur-Morin, June 8, 2014

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 8, 2014 in Saint-Germain-sur-Morin (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an atmospheric optical phenomenon (halo, sun dog…) (class A).

What happened

On a Sunday, between 1 and 2 p.m., a witness noticed a very large blue-grey circle surrounding the sun. They watched it and took a photograph. The picture also shows a small bright spot in the upper left, inside the circle.

GEIPAN's investigation concluded that the witness had seen a solar halo, a typical phenomenon that appears under particular atmospheric conditions. The small bright spot is not an object but a stray reflection of the sun caused by the camera's optics. The case was classified A (identified): solar halo.
