Sighting in Saint-Jorioz, September 10, 2010

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 10, 2010 in Saint-Jorioz (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the planet Jupiter (class A).

What happened

At around 10:30 pm, a witness noticed a very bright object at very high altitude in the night sky. They watched it move about for 40 minutes, then stopped observing while the phenomenon was still visible.

GEIPAN considered that these features, a very bright object at night and a long observation ended by the witness while the object was still in the sky, pointed to a celestial body. A check of the sky's configuration showed that the planet Jupiter, at magnitude -2.9 and visible to the naked eye, was in the south-east sector as seen from the observation site. The case was classified A: the witness had observed the planet Jupiter.
