Sighting in Saint-Mandé, June 26, 2014

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 26, 2014 in Saint-Mandé (Val-de-Marne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 5:48 p.m., a witness noticed a black dot in the sky and was intrigued by it. They thought it was a parachutist, as shown in a sketch attached to their questionnaire, and filmed it with their phone. To get out of the sun, the witness moved and lost sight of the object. Watching the video afterwards, they got the impression that the object had been following a trajectory. GEIPAN received only this one account.

The object seemed to be floating over Paris, which is rather unusual. The witness considered a parachutist very unlikely in the capital. The investigation found, however, that the prefecture can authorise jumps over Paris for very specific missions. GEIPAN did not find any parachuting club that had carried out such a jump, and these jumps are probably reserved for professional activities. Another possibility was a small child's helium balloon of unusual shape that had been released by accident. The weak, very unstable wind recorded at Paris-Montsouris fits either hypothesis.

Without better-quality images, and without having traced a possible parachutist, GEIPAN classified the case as C, owing to a lack of information and cross-checking. It regards the case as only slightly strange, since several fairly mundane causes could easily explain it.
