Sighting in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, July 9, 2012

Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 9, 2012 in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (Val-de-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

One evening, between 9:30 and 9:50 p.m., a witness noticed an object in the sky and was intrigued by it. Its shape was both rounded and triangular, and the sun was reflecting off it. The object moved without making any noise. It then disappeared into a cloud and was not seen again.

The GEIPAN investigation noted that the object moved vertically while the local wind was weak, according to the weather data. This movement, the reflection and the shape described (an example of a balloon is included in the appendix of the file) strongly suggest a festive balloon filled with helium. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable observation of a festive balloon.
