Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 16, 1980 in Sainte-Soline (Deux-Sèvres, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At around 3:30 a.m., a witness was coming home from a village dance when they noticed an object shaped like a mushroom cap above a field. It was about 15 meters across and gave off a fairly intense red light.

The witness walked closer, to a distance of about 400 meters, then grew frightened and ran off. On the way, they saw the object pass over the village, still giving off red light and making no sound at all.

The investigation found no marks on the ground or on the vegetation. No explanation was found for the sighting, and the GEIPAN therefore classified it as D, unexplained.
