Sighting in Salins, February 27, 1982

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on February 27, 1982 in Salins (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, at about 8:15 p.m., the witness was watching television when they saw, through the living-room window, a large luminous ball with orange flames. They only went to the window about twenty minutes later. They then saw three balls about one metre above the ground, giving off lights of different colours (red, green, orange) and blinking. There was no noise. The witness said they watched the objects until 10:45 p.m., then went back to the television and did not see the phenomenon end. They remained shaken by the experience.

Only one account was collected. The gendarmes visited the site, took photographs and recorded the position of the phenomena as the witness had seen them. They also noted that the initial light had stayed above the other three throughout, a detail the witness no longer mentioned.

The case had first been classified D and was later re-examined. GEIPAN considers the strangeness fairly high, since no solid hypothesis explains three or four luminous balls present for several hours. However, the information is thin: no angular size, no detail on whether the lights moved, and no observed disappearance. It is also unreliable: the twenty-minute delay before looking, the 2.5 hours of observation without seeing the end, and contradictory statements about the witness's interest in UFOs. Symptoms felt afterwards may have amplified the strangeness the witness perceived. The observation cannot be used, so GEIPAN classified it C, for lack of reliable information.
