Sighting in Salles-Curan, June 15, 2015

Aveyron, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 15, 2015 in Salles-Curan (Aveyron, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the planet Venus (class A).

What happened

At about 11:15 p.m., the witness noticed a very bright star in the northwest sky and filmed it. They were puzzled by a sphere that appeared to sit in front of the star. No one else reported seeing it.

GEIPAN considered the account fairly consistent: it lacked precision and came from a single person, but it was backed by two usable videos. The only explanation examined was a mix-up with an optical flaw in the out-of-focus image of the planet Venus, recorded at high zoom.

The case was classified A: the witness had watched Venus through a camcorder with a powerful zoom, and its offset focus had created an artifact in the image, which was taken for a sphere.

Account rewritten by SkyUnknown from the investigation report published by GEIPAN (CNES). The original text and case documents are on the official record.
