Sighting in Samoreau, December 19, 2025
Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on December 19, 2025 in Samoreau (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).
What happened
At around 6:05 pm, a witness walking their dog noticed three yellow balls of light in the sky, perfectly lined up. They seemed motionless or to be moving forward only slightly, and made no sound. The witness watched them for about five minutes, taking two videos and a photo, then continued their walk. Only one account was collected. It was judged to be of good consistency: it was complete, supplemented by a cognitive interview, and both videos could be used in the investigation.
According to the investigation, the strangeness the witness felt came from not being able to identify the objects right away, their complete silence and their very slow movement. The wind was light, from the northwest (6 to 7 km/h). It matches the northward component of the north-south movement seen in the videos, while the southward component was due to a slow rise of the object. The objects were therefore being carried by the wind. Their spherical shape and yellow colour are typical of sky lanterns, probably released from somewhere nearby. A cultural association in the neighbouring village had released lanterns in September 2024, but it told the investigator it had not released any on the day of the sighting. GEIPAN classified the case as A: sky lanterns carried by the wind.
