Sighting in Sartrouville, December 2, 2012

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on December 2, 2012 in Sartrouville (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Late on a Saturday night, at 0:03 on the Sunday, a couple at home noticed about ten red luminous objects in the sky. The objects followed one another at regular intervals and vanished one by one into the cloudy sky. The witness also described bluish reflections.

GEIPAN found that the description matched the appearance of Thai lanterns. Bluish reflections are uncommon on such lanterns, unless the lanterns are blue. The wind recorded at Verneuil was weak, unstable and from the west, which fits the movement of the objects. The lanterns may have been released on the banks of the Seine at the end of a party. The case is classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
