Sighting in Tanger, September 5, 1954

Morocco

Sighting on September 5, 1954 in Tanger (Morocco). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Three people, a couple and their daughter, were near the P.T.T. radio relay station at Cape Spartel, Morocco, in the late afternoon when they noticed a circular black spot very high in the sky. Its apparent size was about that of an aircraft. One of the witnesses followed its movements toward the south for around ten minutes. It gave off no glow, smoke or sparks, and no sound was heard. Its movement was punctuated by sudden stops. It eventually moved off to the west, dropping toward the sea until it vanished at the horizon.

Only one account was collected, along with a map and a sketch. The investigation considered that it could have been an aircraft from the Rabat-Salé air base, home to a fighter wing flying Vampire jets, performing aerobatics. The apparent stationary moments might correspond to times when the witness saw the aircraft head-on. However, the lack of information on the object's angular size, together with its disappearance over the sea toward the horizon, prevents this hypothesis from being fully confirmed. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for insufficient data.
