Sighting in Toulouse, June 9, 2013

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 9, 2013 in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

In the night of 8 to 9 June 2013, at about one in the morning, a motorist noticed pale lights moving silently across a cloudy night sky. They watched the effects for several minutes. Only one account of the sighting was collected.

The investigation found that the description clearly pointed to a light show, possibly involving a laser, of the kind nightclubs often use to advertise themselves. The same phenomenon had been seen at the same spot on the night of 22 to 23 June by another witness. Saturday-to-Sunday nights are the ones when such displays are most likely, and the cloud cover, confirmed by the Météociel weather record, greatly strengthens the effect of these projectors. The witness's description matched what a multi-beam searchlight produces, similar to the one shown in an online video of a searchlight hire company for weddings.

GEIPAN did not try to pinpoint the source of the display that evening. It noted, however, that a nightclub in Saint-Elix-le-Château frequently uses this type of equipment and was very probably the source. The case was classified B: very probable sighting of a light show from a multi-beam searchlight.
