Sighting in Tournan-en-Brie, June 5, 2010

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on June 5, 2010 in Tournan-en-Brie (Seine-et-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

At around 11:55 p.m., many witnesses saw a column of orange balls moving across the sky. Only one questionnaire was sent to the GEIPAN, but the description it contained and the characteristics of the sighting pointed the investigation toward Thai lanterns.

The GEIPAN contacted the town hall's Communication Department, which supported this explanation: a wedding had taken place in the town on Saturday, June 5, with a release of Thai lanterns at midnight. The investigation concluded that the witnesses had seen flying lanterns drifting past, and the case was classified A (identified).
