Sighting in Toussus-le-Noble, February 4, 2012

Yvelines, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on February 4, 2012 in Toussus-le-Noble (Yvelines, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

At around 11:15 p.m., people in the Yvelines and Aube departments saw a blue-green and orange luminous phenomenon cross the sky. It moved silently along a straight path toward the west-south-west, and remained visible for only a few seconds.

GEIPAN found that the accounts matched the typical features of an atmospheric entry. The direction of travel and the very short duration rule out the re-entry of space debris. The case is classified B: it was probably the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid, in other words a meteorite fall.
