Sighting in Trilbardou, September 28, 2014

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 28, 2014 in Trilbardou (Seine-et-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Between 9:02 and 9:08 pm, a motorist sitting in their car watched about ten twinkling lights cross the night sky. They moved slowly and silently at low altitude, all in the same direction and at the same speed. As they drifted away, the witness described them as small reddish halos. Other motorists were stopped on the road, but no other account was collected.

The investigation found that orange or red globes crossing the sky within a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggest Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The lights travelled from west to north-east, which matches the south wind recorded at Roissy that day. Because these lanterns give off fairly little light, witnesses usually judge them to be farther away, and therefore larger, than they really are. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
